Experiencing Sudden Hearing Loss? Don't Wait.
There aren’t many ear issues I would call an emergency. Many people go to the emergency room for vertigo, but I wouldn’t classify that as an emergency. However, there is one case that I think needs immediate attention and that is sudden hearing loss.
If you experience sudden hearing loss, you need to see by a doctor within 3-4 days so that it can be managed properly.
There are a few reasons that it might happen, such as earwax build up or fluid behind the ear drum. However, it could be something more serious, such as “sudden sensorineural hearing loss” (SSNHL). While uncommon, SSNHL can lead to deafness in one ear. It usually is best treated with steroids, but the sooner the better. If there is a delay over a month, research has shown that medications don’t have much of an effect.
