Noises You Might Be Missing
The human ear can only hear certain frequencies, and as we get older, the window of frequencies we can hear continues to get smaller. “Frequency” is the number of cycles (or waves) a sound has in one second. The lowest frequency humans can hear is 20Hz and the highest is 20KHz. Sound waves vibrate in our ears and send a signal to our brain. Our brain remembers the different vibrations, and this is how we can recognize and distinguish different sounds.
As we get older, our ears are not able to pick up all frequencies, especially higher ones. High frequency hearing loss usually leads to trouble hearing in noisy places, like restaurants. Hearing aids help people by taking the frequencies that are lost and amplifying them. This can make a big difference and allow people to hear conversations and continue to maintain social connections and relationships, which are often threatened by age-related hearing loss.
