Why Kleenex is listed on every school supply list.

It’s that time of year again when we all start thinking about “Back-to-School”. Whether in a traditional classroom setting, or adjusting to an online learning format, this is a lesson that I believe is good for all young children to hear.

Noses are great at filtering air.  They also humidify air as it is inhaled. Both filtering and humidifying require mucous. When mucus gets too dry or  becomes too filled with debris it creates thick crusts. We call these boogers.

I actually Googled to see if there was a better synonym for these little … er, boogers … but alas, no.

Boogers form at the front of the nose and most adults (most, not all), will clear them manually in a discreet place.

Many children don’t know what “discreet” is. Shoot, my wife says I don’t always know what “discreet” is. Our culture says this is a nasty habit, though.

In theory I agree, although since I make my living at clearing and picking other noses and nasal cavities, I suppose I should clarify that it is a nasty social habit.

I love the teacher who found herself so desperate with a class of 5/25 habitual little pickers that she reached out to the world-wide-web for help. I never would have heard of this book or seen this pledge otherwise.

Kids : Have your parents email me your signed pledge and I’ll send you a $5 gift card to Baskin Robbins.

However, if the next time you come in to see me your mom or dad says you broke your pledge you owe me a single scoop of World Class Chocolate (my favorite flavor at Baskin Robbins).
