A Secret Throat Reflux Medication

 

Throat reflux, or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), can be a challenging disease to treat. There are several reflux medications, but most of them lower the acidity of stomach contents and don’t prevent stomach contents from refluxing up into the throat. Research has shown that reflux of even “non-acid” stomach contents can cause symptoms like throat clearing, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. There is an over the counter medication than does help to prevent all stomach reflux called “Gaviscon Advance.” Research shows that it can make a big difference in the management of LPR because of its high concentrations of sodium alginate. This chemical, derived from seaweed, basically creates a foam which prevents stomach contents from refluxing. There is one issue: it isn’t sold at pharmacies in the U.S. It is only sold in Europe.  

But there’s good news! Through the magic of the internet, we now can get this medication! You can get it on Amazon and Ebay (and I’m sure many other sites.) It is important that you get the right medication. Gaviscon Advance is the one you want. Not “extra strength,” not “new formula,” not “mega dose.” It must say “Advance.” Take 1-2 chewables (or 5-10 cc if you prefer the liquid) after each meal and before going to bed. Beware: one of the flavors it comes in is “Aniseed,” which I am pretty sure is licorice… I’m not a fan, but if you like licorice, go for it. I’m not sure why it isn’t found in the U.S. in pharmacies, but there is plenty of research that shows that it works.
