Sleep Falling

At one point in your life, it is likely that you have woken up suddenly because you felt like your body was falling. Your muscles jerked and you panicked, even if just for a second. What causes this feeling? And can you control it?

These muscle twitches, commonly referred to as hypnic jerks, usually happen not long after you fall asleep. It is still undetermined as to why exactly your body does this. Some have speculated that at this early stage of sleep, your mind is still active enough that your body believes it is awake. Because your muscles are not moving, your brain sends a test tremor through your body to ensure that your muscles are still functioning properly. This sudden jerk in your muscles can cause a sensation that feels like your body is falling. Others have speculated that it is just your muscles having a spasm as they relax after a full day.

Whatever the exact cause is, there are suggested remedies to prevent these sudden jerks. Limiting the amount of caffeine you consume (especially later in the day), eliminating stress, and regularly getting enough sleep can all help to prevent this sensation.

Hypnic jerks are not dangerous, but if you experience them frequently, it could be a sign of a greater sleeping problem. If you are having trouble sleeping, make an appointment with me today by calling 817-261-3000.
