Q: Good idea or bad idea?
This looks like a bad idea, but actually it could work! I have never actually had a patient come in with a tampon in their nose, but they are really good at stopping bleeding.
Packing is a very effective way to stop bleeding. The way they do this is by applying pressure on the vessels that are bleeding. The problem: they aren’t comfortable. The newest packs have a gel coating that makes them more comfortable to have placed than the old gauze packs or sponge packs that expand when wet. The new packs have a balloon that is inflated once they are placed. The pressure stops the bleeding. But it still hurts. But sometimes it’s the only thing that will stop the bleeding.
