Caffeine
What do you do when you have to stay up late to write a paper or didn’t get enough sleep and need a little boost to get the day started? You go for some caffeine. Whether it’s your favorite soda, (I prefer Dr. Pepper), or a cup of coffee, everyone has a go to drink when they need a jolt. But what is actually happening in your body that helps keep you awake?
As your body’s circadian rhythm (which I explain here) determines that you need to rest now, a hormone called adenosine is released to your brain to inform you it is time to sleep. This is what makes you feel tired. When you drink coffee, soda, or tea, the caffeine content takes the same pathway to your brain and basically blocks the adenosine hormone from triggering your brain that you are tired. It is important to know that you still need the same amount sleep. Caffeine is kind of a trick that convinces your brain that you aren’t tired, even though you really are.
WHY CAFFEINE HEADACHES?
When caffeine passes through your blood vessels, it not only stops other hormones like adenosine, it also restricts some blood flow. When you go hours (sometimes a day or more) without caffeine and its effects begin to wear off, your blood vessels are opened up and more blood is able to flow. The sudden increase in blood flow can cause an intense amount of pressure, which is what causes your head to ache.
My recommendation is to limit yourself on the amount of caffeine you consume to prevent this from happening. If you find that you are constantly tired and never feel truly rested, this could be a sign of a bigger problem. As always you can make an appointment with me by calling (817) 261-3000.
