Here's how to help your child prepare for surgery.

-       You may be told not to let your child eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. This include chewing gum, mints and drinking water. Small children may need to avoid food and drink for a shorter time. Typically the anesthesia team will be in contact with you in the days before surgery with the exact details of what food or drink can be taken, so be sure to ask them for the details.

-       If your child takes any prescribed, over-the-counter medicines, herbs or vitamins ask the doctor about taking them before surgery.

-       Help your child choose a toy or blanket to bring to the hospital.

-       Bathe your child and remove any jewelry. This includes hair clips and earrings.

-       Dress your child in comfortable clothes and bring a change of underwear.

-       Call the doctor’s office if your child gets a fever, cough, or cold. Surgery may need to be postponed.
