Maybe This is Why You Keep Clearing Your Throat

Do you clear your throat all the time? There are two pretty common causes of frequent bothersome throat clearing. One is post-nasal drainage from the nose. This can be due to allergies, but also sinus inflammation and non-allergic rhinitis can be factors as well. If you have throat clearing and post-nasal drainage, I would recommend getting a nasal steroid like Flonase from your pharmacy and try using it consistently for 3 weeks. If it gets better, great! If not, consider this second common cause: reflux!

Yes, reflux can get into the throat and is a very common cause of throat clearing. It is called LPR, or “laryngopharyngeal reflux.” I spoke about it in this post. Sometimes called “silent reflux,” because it doesn’t feel like you have reflux or heartburn, LPR is a very common cause of bothersome throat clearing.
