16 lb. Tumor and Mercy Ships

WHO - Sambany

WHAT - 16 lb. tumor for 36 years

WHERE - Madagascar

HOW - Mercy Ships

For 36 years Sambany had suffered with a tumor growing on his neck. Over time the tumor had grown to more than 16 pounds.

People either ridiculed him or feared him, leading to Sambany rarely leaving his home. Unable to pay for medical treatment, Sambany’s life changed when he heard about the free medical care being offered by Mercy Ships, a global charity that has operated hospital ships since 1978, with more than 2.54 million people receiving direct benefit from its services.

Following a successful twelve hour operation, Mercy Ships volunteer Laurin accompanied Sambany back to his village.

This story is especially meaningful and impactful to me because medical missions are so near to my heart and personal calling as a Christian. Can you even imagine the difference in Sambany’s quality-of-life since this surgery was performed?

As you may or may not know, my wife and I have been actively involved in building a ministry presence in the southern part of Africa in the small kingdom of Eswatini - a country not far from Madagascar where Sambany was from - with the hope of bringing much-needed medical care and attention to the region.

Oversized head and neck masses (although not normally this large) are quite common in this part of the world largely due to the inadequacy and unavailability of the necessary healthcare providers. Lord willing, head and neck mass removal is just one of the many services I hope to bring to Eswatini in the near future through regular, short-term mission trips.
